Technical Advice on Explorer Needed (Pics)

Did it get hit in the front too or something? Why's the hood all bent?

From the looks of things the car was locked when the fire broke out, and the Fire Dept opened the hood to put it out, and busted the window out to get into the interior.

For the price of $0 it is still a great deal though, nice leather seats, disc brake 31 spline 8.8, springs...

It's Scrap...being Parted Out

"Small fire"...my ass! This was burning for quite some time before they put it completely out.

I guess some things you hear about are too good to be true.

The owner came out of the store to see security guards w/ extinguishers and a small crowd. They broke both door windows on the Ex. Sport, and retrieved his laptop and other important computer belongings. Don't know about the hood dent.

I peered straight at the MAF housing & throttle body since the intake dripped to the concrete, and even the radiator fins sprung a holy leak. The gauge cluster IS blacked out, and the smell of the interior leaves a taste of smoke afterwards.

So, as it turns it, I'm gonna haul it 10 minutes away to a storage unit and part it out. I'm gonna use the center console, leather seats, radio bezel, cruise On/Off buttons, teardrop 15" wheels, and probably the open 3.73 axle w/ discs.

If anyone is in the Houston area, you can take whatever you want for dirt cheap. The rest is going to scrap. I'll take requests for other smaller items or parts that are easy to ship from 77088. The carpet & trim is still clean, and the body/hatch is straight. Luggage rack & step bars are barely used factory options.

I'm betting there are a lot of potentially scrwed up electrical items on that truck and it may only be worthwhile to try to salvage the driveline, interior, and body from the windshield back.

I AM going to salvage it. I will see if I can find a place to store it first because of its condition.

The fire has gotten into the dash. I can see the smoke damage on the dash. Have a look under the instrument cluster by the pedals. Betcha it's torched and melted. Plus you'd need all the underhood harness and parts.
The truck maybe free but you'll spend a lot time and money to get it running. Buy a similar running truck and use this one for parts.
My $0.02 .

I used to work for a doing doing cleanup after mold, fire damage, water damage, etc. The gauges didnt worry me that much since it had the tach in the cluster. Meh, Ive already installed a 3" dash on my steering column.

Bent, yea. It requires more money than I wanna put into it afterall. I already have another restoration taking up my garage...

That little red piece you are talking about was a RECALL. I just had mine replaced last week. They recalled them cause they would leak and start fires. It was part of the cruise control mounted on the master cylinder.

Yes, it was a recall.

Campaign Number: 06V286000 Date: 2006-Aug-01

Component: Vehicle Speed Control
Defect Summary: ON CERTAIN TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH SPEED CONTROL, GASOLINE OR NATURAL GAS ENGINES, THE SPEED CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH MAY OVERHEAT.
Consequence Summary: OVERHEATING COULD RESULT IN SMOKE OR BURN AND AN UNDERHOOD FIRE.
Corrective Summary: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A FUSED WIRING HARNESS INTO THE SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 7, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT FORD AT 1-866-436-7332. (NOTE: ALSO SEE RECALLS 05V017 AND 05V388)

After you get it fixed up. Have the recall (05S28)performed on it. You'll need the jumper harness and a new switch.
That wire is constant power, And when that switch leaks it shorts out. The new harnes just goes inbetween the switch and the truck hrness and has a fuse in it.
As for the damage I would look for a parts truck

No need. :no2:

For the damage this IS a parts truck. You can see where the clear part of the gauges and the dash itself is discolored (didn't notice that before) They are lucky the whole thing didn't go up.
For the recall, if the existing switch is a leaker you get a new "improved" switch, no fused jumper is needed. For some reason I just got the new switch on my F-150 though... I ain't complaining.

Yea, they are lucky no one was around or hurt, and that it wasn't in his garage at his home. Open parking lot FTW....er...less loss.

I'd take a serious look under the hood at what got burnt. Everything is fixable...but how much coin you have to spend is a big factor. From the pics I'd definitely not spend too much on that one.

Dunno about the hood. Not worth it.

Hmm. Sounds like a good candidate for a tube front and exocage with a V8 swap :D

Maybe just clean it up a bit and sell it as a clean project.
