big job?

i am swapping transfer cases in my B2 for the same one thats in her now, 1350 manual for a 1350 manual.

i dug a spare trans/tcase combo out from the garage and it took about 5-10 minutes to remove the tcase from the trans, just the 5 bolts and a little work with the prybar got it apart in no time.

so i figure under the truck i could do the swap for my first time in what, half hour-45mins? it doesnt seem like a real big job,, just the 5 bolts holding the tcase to the trans, the shift linkage, 4 bolts for the rear dshaft and the speed sensors and the plug in for the 4x4 indicator lights? im guessing when i have it all ready to come out and rear dshaft removed i can just pull the tcase back and the front shaft should slide out right? and what type of oil should i fill the tcase back up with,, just gear oil or mercon or ??
thanks for help in advance

Yeah, that sounds about right. You may find getting the front shaft lined up and in the hole way a bit tricky, but I've had issues with that doing it both ways.

Never put gear oil in a Ranger t-case. Transfer cases haven't used gear oil since the 70s.

There is a "transfer case fluid" that Ford put out a few years back, but it's more for e-shift cases. It has friction modifier in it for the shift cam and mag clutches. For you, Merc is just as good. That t-case stuff is expensive.

thanks man, about how much mercon should i need?

3 or 4 quarts I think. It's hard for me to keep track because I buy the stuff by the case.

ok thanks man. 4 it is, better too much than not enough

Sweet Jesus. What a pita that was. I got 4 of the 5 bolts out, driveshaft out, speedo plug unhooked so its just 1 bolt holding the tease in but I couldn't stand the cold/frustration any more for today. I thought it was gonna be a fairly easy job, it wasn't too bad but accessing all the bolts is the bitch of it. I wish I removed the skid plate at the begining but oh well next time I'll know what to do. I also plan on re installing the skid plate when I remove the t case so i can let it sit on the plate then lift it off, same goes for installing the new case.
My garage is up probably 100ft behind my house and that much usually doesn't get plowed, now theres about 2 ft of fresh snow and some 4th snowbanks. I hope to be tearing up that snow in 4wd by tomorrow evening if I start at it after dinner

Yeah, they can be a pain. Not taking the skid plate off makes them worse.

well praise god almighty.

i am pissed and happy at the same time.

i had the case ready to take out all unbolted and everything and while i was beating on it trying to get it to split from the trans i figured id hit the lever to engage 4x4 for shits. so i hit it with all the strength the good lord gave me and sure enough it moved a bit, so i kept hitting it back and forth and i hit it back in 4wd and i let her off the jacks and since the rear driveshaft is unbolted i figured id see if she moved with the front driveshaft. sure enough i fired her up and she moved. well sweet jesus looks like tonight im gonna bolt it back up and ill be 4 wheelin yeeee haww

you guys have skid plates? i don't have shit under my b2

Why in the hell didn't you take off the skid plate? Makes it 10x easier.

I have a 1/2" Ratcheting wrench, wont attempt to pull a Tcase without it. It takes just one flathead screwdriver to pry the case away from the trans..

I've got it down to under 10 min to pull a Tcase. Wish I could have helped you...

it didnt need to be took off until i got to a couple of the bolts that were closer to the bottom. and i wanted to leave it on so i could let the case drop on it and then lift it off that instead of prying it off the trans and having it smash my face into the concrete which is more than likely what would happen lol, and trust me that scredriver wouldnt do it. i was using a cold cut and 3 lb hammer and that took alot of beating to get it just a bit loose

bolted everything back up and tested out the 4x4 and WOW!!!!!! this thing is a tank in snow, only other real snow wheelin i done was in my mazda and she was good but not this good! my other b2 had a head gasket gone pretty much all winter so i never got much use out of that one either.

i traveled her through almost 2 ft of snow, i couldnt believe she never got suck, as long as i was light on the gas and never let a tire spin she would climb a mountain. i did get stuck a few times from bottoming out on the rear axle mostly but the shovel fixed that problem lol. i cant wait to get the lift and the 33s on, she should be something fierce then
