this is kind of a newb question but its really bugging me so please help

i have my 93 all torn apart waiting for the new tranny to arrive, but the other day i put the tcase on the bench and drained the fluid out of it so its ready for new stuff when i put it back in the truck. but today i was just messing around with it and if i shake it a little bit it sounds like something knocking around in there. and also if i turn any of the yokes i can hear the chain rolling like its working but it sounds...strange..almost like somethiign is broken inside, also if i turn it one direction(forward) it turns fine but if i try to switch directions it locks up.. it seemed to work good and didnt make those noises when it was on the truck and full of fluid..since im very new to ford i was just wondering whats up with it? should i take it apart and look inside before i put it back in the truck or is that just the sounds the chain makes when theres no fluid in it?

also if i do take it apart can RTV be used to put it back together? or is there a gasket i should buy?
thanks
