what is the difference between a 86 TC computer and wiring and the newer TC stuff? Reason is because I got a 90 ranger and I'm putting the 86 stuff in it cause I got a good deal on it. Also if I want to run with the ranger ignition what all needs to be done and how would timing changes be made?

not exactly sure on exact differences but i think the 86 uses the small vam and 87-88 use a big vam and possibly different injectors not positive. but if you have the ecu, vam and injectors from the tc then you are fine.

as far as wiring there are a few pins that are different so you will need diagrams for your year tc not the newer ones.

as far as timing changes go if you keep the DIS, you will need the moates j3 chip and programer to adjust timing, also if the timing tables are the same on an 86 tc as 87-88 then you will need to retard your timing 4 degrees to run the 8 plug DIS (at least thats what i was told i had to do with my LA2 from an 87)

i did basically what you are wanting to do, and its pretty straight forward any questions just ask

does the '90 have a MAF or is it an early '90 without one?

the wiring you will have to modify to the ranger harness for the '86 TC engine is:
-add the VAM
-add the boost regulator
-add the knock sensor

to save yourself some work:
-use the ranger throttle body so you don't have to change connectors
-the baro sensor is the same as the MAP sensor mounted to the engine compartment

that should cover most wiring stuff...

im going to say as long as his truck is fuel ingected it should have a MAF, and my 93 didnt have a map sensor i had to use the baro, and i didn't mess with the boost regulator

The VAM is smaller for the '86, but the injectors are the same as the '87-88 turbocoupes (35pph).

nope, my '90 didn't have a MAF, they changed early in the year, mine was made in late '89...

I'm running DIS with the 4 plug head, I took the signal wires to the drivers side coil and grounded them and it works great. If you look back at some of my posts from a while ago I went into detail a few times on modifying the turbo block to accept the crank sensor and the other modifications needed
