I am in the middle of a putting a Taurus Vulcan engine into my 98 Ranger. I have changed out the head gaskets, and am about to put in a new oil pump, and use the oil pan from the old Ranger engine.

Given the Ranger oil pan is of a slightly different shape, how have you all handled any adjustments to the dip-stick, to assure it gives a proper reading?

My first thought wouldn't be the dip stick but the oil pickup location in relation to the bottom of the pan, then making sure the volume of oil was high enough. After that you can make a full mark on the dip stick if it's necessary.

I used the Taurus pump/pickup & pan, mainly as I overlooked the need of a new Ranger pan, due to the fact that my old one had 3-4 holes knocked through it, when the rods let loose, and I did not have anytime to find another Ranger pan. So we set it in to see what it fit like and it fit great.

I think the Taurus pan fits the Ranger cross member better than the ranger pan did, I have had no problems with this setup, and my truck see's 6K rpm quite frequently. This is in a lowered 2wd so ground clearance is an issue with this as well.

I am putting in a Ranger oil pump, so it should be fine in terms of location / depth into the ranger oil pan. I don't want to use the Taurus pan - it is a bit dented...

Given the dipstick length and such is different in the Taurus engine, I can not trust the "full" marker. I could just put a "full amount" of oil, run it to get oil into the filter, and make any adjustments to the dipstick to count that as full, I suppose....

I would almost think the taurus pan would have a baffle on the back of the pan for oil control on hard accelleration which would be the side of the pan.and the ranger pan would have a baffle in the rear of the pan for oil control.but maybe im over thinking it since this isnt a performance application.Im used to building for performance so idk

In my case the pans were exactly the same internally, the depth of the step was different, with the FWD pan being deeper in the front

I discovered last night that the 98 Ranger pan does not quite fit on the 02 Taurus engine. I will have to go with the Taurus pan (or maybe an 02 Ranger pan???).

Going with the Taurus pan will solve the issues with the dipstick at the beginning of this thread.

Does your Taurus motor have a windage tray on the crankshaft? What's holding it off from fitting, It should drop right on.

Yes it does - I do think that is what is blocking it. Is it OK to just take it off? It is not like this is a high performance situation where I am looking for a bit more horsepower - at the same time, I am not looking to just "change things" either...

Putting it another way, is better to take this windage tray off, and then use the Ranger pan, or leave it be and use the Taurus pan?

Man im glad ur asking all these questions im getting ready for the taurus swap and this is helping me get ready for it.On the other hand sorry you are running into issues. But you know it always has to be something stupid that holds up a project.lol

I used the Taurus pan with no problems, use the Taurus dipstick an tube an you should not have any problems as far as the correct oil level. I would not take off the windage tray, it could cost you some mileage & add drag on the motor.

I know I said mileage in a 3.0 thread, now that's funny.

Installed a new Taurus oil pump, and the Taurus oil pan this evening.

Thanks JP02XLT for your patient insight!

I also installed a new RANGER water pump, given the "nose" of a Ranger pump is a bit longer than the Taurus pump.

Timothy - I am planning to post a thread of "my experience" doing the engine swap - maybe it will be useful for other newbies like me to this process!!

No Problem KRS, Been there myself as well, Yes your exactly correct on the nose being longer on the water pump.

im about to do this swap i have a 2000 ranger flex fuel im gunna be putting in an 07 taurus motor in do yall have any tips on how to do this.

the taurus motor is a vulcan but its not flex fuel

Follow what was written above as far as changing parts, Use your injectors from your truck to match your ECM, otherwise its just swap, plug & play.
