I just finished swapping my old 3.0 flex fuel for a 2005 taurus 3.0 flex fuel, and it doesn't start. I turn the key, it cranks, stutters every few seconds and won't fire. Also the negative wire gets hot every time it I crank it, I've been unable to figure that out either.

Have you run through the basics?

Does it have fuel?
Does it have spark?
Any obstructions in getting air?
Is the timing correct? I imagine for '05 that should be a cam sensor that controls this
You mention your truck is a 2000 but the engine is an '05 Are there wiring differences in the harness that might be confusing the ECU?

0. Software
0.1 Buy a ELM327 (<$20) and install FORDScan in your laptop
0.2 Buy the Ford Workshop Manual that covers 2000 and/or 2005

1. Fuel
1.1 There is a rollover protection valve (aka Inertia Fuel Shutoff IFS, see photo below) that can shut off fuel supply if triggered. It is behind the passenger side foot well carpet, close to the door frame. Its red button should be pressed down if it popped.
1.2 Rent a fuel pressure kit from autozone or oreilly to test the fuel pressure at key-on (don't crank). The fuel port is on the fuel rail with a black plastic screw on cap.

Welcome to TRS :)

Try 50/50 test anytime you have a Crank but No Start
Spray fuel into the engine, i.e. gasoline, ether(quick start), carb cleaner, ect..................
Try to start
If it starts and then dies you have a fuel delivery issue
If it doesn't start then its a Spark issue
50/50 instant results, no guessing

Don't over think it, its a gasoline engine so needs 3 things
Compression
Spark
Fuel

Generally speaking compression issues just effect 1 or 2 cylinders, burnt valves
But you can check 1 or 2 cylinders if possible, above 150psi is expected

Which leaves spark or fuel, so do the 50/50 test and let us know

Watch the CEL(check engine light) on the dash
It should come on with Key ON, that means computer has powered up
It should GO OFF as soon as engine starts to turn using starter motor, this means computer is getting a timing signal from Crank Sensor and Cam sensor
If CEL stays on then check that crank sensor is plugged in, no spark and no fuel without crank sensor signal

2000 Ranger 3.0l and 2005 Taurus 3.0l should use the same 2 wire Cam sensor, 3.0l can also get a no start with no Cam Sensor signal, its an oil pump thing
