I just bought a 92 Ranger, 2.3L, A4LD off of ebay. The guy said the tranny was bad, no forward gears, only reverse. Once I got it I checked it out and found it very low on fluid. After adding fluid, it has forward and reverse, but now there is a tapping noise that sounds like it is coming from the torque converter and it won't shift out of 1st. I don't know how long it was run with basically no fluid, so could that have damaged the trans pump, causing the tapping noise and no shifting? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Running with no fluid for longer than, say a few minutes could very well destroy the pump.
