nothing is wrong with the A4LD right now. Its just i was thinking about doing a 4.0 swap and was going to keep it but i hear that it is junk so i don't know. I intend on keeping this truck for AS LONG AS POSSIBLE. I think the 4.0 will do for now since i have to emissions test it one day i will move to Tennessee with my dads side of the family (Indiana's winters suck) lol and then when the 4.0 is done i think a 302 will fit nicely

NO . . the stock 2.8 came with a C5. You change the bell housing only to use the SAME transmission with a 289/302/251. You just take a bell from a C4 or C5 that was behind a V8. So sorry, wrong again You need the flexibility of changing the bell. The stock 2.8 bell would allow the C4 or C5 to work behind the 4.0.

Where are you getting your information?

By your logic a 5.0 M5OD will bolt to a 2.3L.


Also, the 4R70 is an electronic transmission. You can bolt it to whatever you want to, but if the right computer isn't there to tell it what to do it won't do anything.

5.0 logic. C4 bolts to a 302, c4 and c5 share bell housings. 302 and aod, as well as aode are factory combos. 4r70 is a aode with updates. The 3.8 4r70 WILL bolt to a 5.0.

Therefore, if it bolts up to a C4, it bolts up to the above stated trannies.

You can bolt it to whatever you want. Still needs a computer to tell it to do things. A 2.9 computer will NOT work a 4R70.

How do i tell if i have the A4LD transmission? Its A 1990 bronco ii Eddie Bauer Edition 2.9L automatic transmission if that helps.

However I shouldn't have chimed in this I guess since it's a 2.9. For some reason I thought I was in the 5.0.

True. You'll have to get a external tranny controller for any mechanical to electronic swap. There are plenty out there and run in the 4-600 range.

Yeah, but if you are going to go with a stand-alone controller I'd try to get a 5R55. Easier swap.

Ok I am confused what does all this mean? What should i do? I am only 15 and all this about the c5 and c4 and manual transmission or computer transmission is like teaching a 2 year old calculus.

The A4LD is the obviously trans even for the 4.0 in your situation. It is inherently a weak transmission. But if it is working fine, just go with it. Change the fluid often and don't overheat it. If you want to change transmissions, you could use a C4 or a C5 as long as you get a bellhousing from an 83-85 2.8 C5 transmission. That bellhousing will allow a C4 transmission or another C5 transmission bolt up to your engine, either 2.9 or 4.0. Got it?
