im swapping in a 4.0 in place on my old 2.9 (finaly) and im using the tranny from the 2.9(manual). my problem is that the 4.0 and wire harness went to a auto trans. is there anythign i can do to make this work or will i have to find that legendary manual explorer just to get a wire harness?

I can't say for sure, but I think you'll need the harness and computer from a manual trans truck. You might want to get the man trans itself too, as that little 2.9L trans is not gonna like the torque from a 4.0L one bit (assuming it's the FM146, as most '88 4x4s are).

the auto harness will work, you will need to cut the 5pin round plug that went on the auto and splice two wires together, the haynes manual helped me in figuring out the wire colors. Im at work now, if you want the colors i can get them on my break. you need the CPP installed as well, or splice those together so the truck will start. i just finished my a4ld- m5od last weekend and she runs like a champ now

if you could get me those wire colors that would be great... and what is this "ccp" that i have to find and install as well or is there a way around that? tell me were the wires go and i will do it that way... lol thanks alot

on my truck bear in mind its a 1990 i had to splice the pink w/ red/blue stripe, both wires were on the round plug that hooked in to the automatic the cpp is the clutch positioning sensor, it mounts on the pushrod on the master and the plug should be capped under the dash, i also used the manual computer when i did my swap, you can bypass the cpp by splicing the wires, those wires i have no clue on what they should be, i wanted to get mine to look as stock as possible, if you have any questions just PM me and i would be glad to help

get some good elecrical diagrams for the donor and your truck like the factory EVTM from ebay.

manual explorers aren't that hard to find you might want a manual cpu theres some programing differences.it should be from a truck of the same year or calibration, some have egr some have more than one oxygen sensor, etc

you should be able to splice in your current tranny harness once you figure out where the wires go(EVTM)

how long can i expect the fm146 last if i take her easy on it when i do my 4.0L swap?

Depends on the condition of it now, if it is making any noise, probably not too long, but I have had one last for about a year or so, till I sold the BII, and it was still holding up. And I beat the shiiite out of it.

I used a auto computer in my swap, like forementioned, just swap the wires, mine ran like a champ!

well thank you for all your info... i didn't have to do anything really for the tranny or the wire harness to it... my truck runs just fine without doing anything to it... i didn't need a manual computer for it... so either i did something really good or just got really lucky... thanks again
