Tanks too damn small!

My gas gauge reads empty when filled, and slowly creeps to where it should be after ~100 Km. It reads correctly at 3/4 tank down to empty. Fill it up and it reads empty again. If its been parked for a few months I forget where it's truly at and have to fill it, usually about $5.00. Right now, winter, I'm getting ~ 425Km from a tank, $80.00 @ 1.09/L

that works out to about 17.2L/100km (the lower the number, the better the economy) mine is running around 17.8 (though i said that above)

which truck is that in? what tires and gears do you have?

I get about 560km's (350miles) on my 88 Bll also, but that's short runs all day and gear blocking. j6boomer, I'd like to know what YOU'RE doing, 'cause by your calc's, I'm shy by,what, 200km's or 120 more miles? How do you do that? At 1.31-1.41 litre-Lord almighty!

If you were referring to me, I'm running an '85 b-II/4.0/5-spd/4.10/31x10.5x15" delivering pizzas:icon_surprised:.

Richard, yeah i was...

i think the tires might have a big impact on that... i've got 33x12.5 on 15x10 steel rims...

i could always put my 15x8 alcoas with 31x10.5's back on

maybe i'll get a superchips and tune it for econ?

I am glad I found this thread, my (new to me) B2 has dropped to 1/4 tank by about 200 miles and I only put 9 US gallons into the tank to fill up. Calculations work out to 21 mpg running 205/70-15's, all else being stock. I will try running 300-350 miles before my next fill-up.

Not sure how I'd do the math. I have a 2.9 with 4.88s and 36 14.5 tires. I'm sure my odometer is way off now. Ant suggestions?

Do you have access to a gps? Some phones have gps. That will tell you your true speed and with the calculators in the tech section you should be able to figure things out. With a little thought the calculators will do it for you even without gps.
Good luck,

Richard

I do have gps where I can calculate speeds. But it would only be accurate if I drove a full tank to empty ob the highway going the same speed..right?

Most GPS units have a trip odometer where you can see how many miles you've driven. Just reset it to zero and remember to always have it turned on when you drive.

Drive at 50 mph or 100 kmh according to your speedometer. Then look at your gps and compare. You can then use the calculators to figure everything out.

^^ bingo!

Or you can go old school.

The low tech method is to get out on a highway with mile markers, get it up to 60 on the gauge and set a stop watch, If you don't hit the next mile marker in the window of 59 to 61 you are out of range. That's how I checked mine after a trans swap when I couldn't get the old drive gear out of the new T-case.
