Tailgate wont open

open up that lil metal cover on the back of the tailgate and see wats wrong... the lil plast things prolly broke.

There was a thread on this recently. Here's the link to it, followed by a quote from the thread. Do as Heavyfire said, and remove the metal access panel. Then you can see what's going on. Most likely you have broken one or both of the clips below:

There are some plastic clips that pull on each side. Mine did the same thing, only one side would open. I went to Ford and got the new clips for about 5 dollars.

They look similar to this:

The old models' tailgate had no access panel.

You have to remove the handle and end latches to replace those connectors.

How old are we talking? Gen I and Gen II's? Or just Gen I?

yea mine broke too I didn't think you could buy them separately, I fixed mine with freakin zip ties lmao! Anyone got a part number?

I don't know.
The tailgate on my 90 project has no access panel.
Neither did my 83.

I can't recall if the two 93s I had had access panels or not.
My 2000's both did.

You should be able to get at it from the back side with a flat head screw driver to jimmy the latches so you can get it down and work on it.

I have one in my truck, I'll go get it in a bit and post it up......

Part Number E83Z-5421952-B is the number you're after. It comes with two pieces. I only used one because only one broke.

BTW, mine is also a 96.

EDIT: These things fold in half when you install them if the picture looks funny.
