anyone try making their own? i pretty much know how i can make them outta metal rod, i just cant figure out how to mount/brace it on the side of the light that goes along the bed. i want this to be functional, not for looks. any ideas?
thanks, Jay

take it around past the light and tack er right to the body :icon_welder: :icon_thumby:
depends on how nice you want it to look

ive made a couple pairs of them, i mock them up with coat hanger and then tack the pieces togther to make sure they all fit correctly, then start bending the actual rod and check the fittment as i go. for mounting i simply used 2 pieces of flat stock and slid them in the gap between the tail gate and the tail light and then drilled 3 holes in the flat stock so i could securely mount them to the bed side. heres some pics from my first gen,the mounting would be the same for yours just a different more rounded shape.

Damn those look good.........I been thinking about making a set for my 94 explorer.........unless you want to make me a set.....:icon_confused:

What size round stock did you use?

i think it was 1/2 or 5/8? i built those ones about 7 years ago, theyve been repainted about 3 times and now theyre hanging up in the garage waiting to go on another ranger. once the weather breaks i plan on making a pair for my 94 to keep them from getting mashed accidentally, ill be sure to take lots of pics when i do.

those look great man, ive always liked those guards.

maybe when i finally get to make my rollbar...:icon_welder:

for homemade that looks really good. did u use a torch to heat and bend them or just lock in a vice n hammer away?

i use a torch to heat them, once they get cherry red they pretty much fold right over. im working on a latch system to hold my tire carrier open with the tail gate down, so i may get started on these guards pretty soon (i also want to add another light tab to my brush guard so i can run 3 lights on the bumper)

i bent up some brake line last night to get the general shape of it, i was going to use a coat hanger but decided that brake line would hold its shape better when using it for a template. hopefully ill have something in steel by monday?
