1990 2.3 5 speed. All tuned up. Every electrical components including Computer are all brand new.
The problem I am having is when the key is turned on the Tach jumps up to 3 grand and just stays there after stand up. It just barely moves when reved up.

If it's the wires, which one could it be?

Thanks for your help

Tach problems

I would begin by checking the wires behind the cluster to see if there is a bad connection any place. Also if the cluster has been swapped in from a V6 ranger that could also cause an in proper reading. it could also be that the driver (motor) in the factory tach has gotten cooroded after many years. If all else fails go with an aftermarket tach. The signal needed to operate the tach can be obtained easiest from the tach test port wich will be under the dash behind the fuse panel where the harness comes through the firewall. You can distinguish it from everything else because it will be the only wire not connected to anything. Its gonna be a single wire with a female spade terminal end.
