okay i found out what color the wire is that im looking for and it is called the tach service connector, so where is it located at, i was told it is black/yellow, so is it under the dash or under the hood?

i have a 1990 ranger 2wd 4 cylinder 2.3L standard cab 5 speed manual

Look for an unused 2-pin connector on the driver side of the engine near the DIS module. That should be the connector that a tech can hook up to an external tach for service work.

tach service connector

i found a black wire with a yellow line. it comes out the dis module toward the cab. it splits off into 2 black with yellow line wires. i cut the wire and the truck still runs. i connected it back together and hooked the tach wire up to it but the tack still wont work. i know the rest of the tach is hooked up right because i hooked it up to my van, it has an ignition coil and it worked perfect. so what exactly will the wire look like and is it possibly behind the dash going into the guage cluster.

i had same problem and not all tachs will work with dis i finaly found a super tach mini that worked.the auto meter tahc i baught didnt have a selector between the 4-6-8 motors and the sun tach did
