tach lights and power

Does anyone have some "detailed" instructions on hooking up a tach? Everything is so vague, hook up the red wire to a nonaccessory power wire or hookup the white wire to the dash lights. Does anyone have some detailed instructions with pictures? I can't seem to find or get to any of those connections without ripping apart my dash.
