Anyone here use a clip on or temporary tach for setting Idle RPM? My 84 Ranger doesn't have a tachometer, and I'm not ready to install one yet. Since I've just rebuilt the motor I want to set the Idle speed and fast Idle by the book, but as I said don't have a tach. I've though about getting a small cheap tach and wiring it up with alligator clips to use while I'm under the hood, but I wanna see what's out there before do it.

How else are you going to know the idle RPM unless you buy a tach?

Would you really borrow a $20 piece so you can set the idle? Just but the damn tach.

Ok let me rephraze that. I will eventually get a tach to put in the truck, but for the time being I don't want to mount one. Biggest reason is I don't know what I'm going to do with the interior in the next year or two, and I've got other vehicles that it could be used on for the same purpose (tuning). I never wanted to borrow one from somebody, I haven't got a problem buying a cheap tach and that's exactly what I was going to do. I was just wanting to see how others might have done what I'm thinking about. What I'm figuring on is more of a "shop test tach" something that can be moved from car to car, and is contained under the hood. I was just asking to see if anyone else had something along the same line to see how they did it. Heck they might even make what I'm thinking about but I wouldn't know where to get it if they did.
