want to swap a t5 into my 99 4.0 and i have read a bunch of threads, but no conclusive straight-answer as to how people are mating the t5 with the transfer case. any junkyard solutions? thanks

t5 swap

okay did find some info, i need a t5 tail housing from a s10, so it is possible.
i am using a t5 from a 87 tbird 2.3t, rebuilt with a ford racing superduty kit, allowing for 330 hp rating

gearing
1. 3.97
2. 2.34
3. 1.46
4. 1.00
5. 0.85
r 3.70 input shaft length 7.41
input shaft diameter 0.59

this thread talks about the t5 swap, the machining he talks about is for the speedo cable, i am not worried about it, because my 8.8 has the sensor in it.

so looks like there are more donor t5s for the transfer case.

Borg Warner transmission are covered in this section; T5 and T5 world class, rear wheel drive (RWD). Typically used in GM, AMC, Ford, Nissan, Honda, Isuzu and Jeeps requiring 5 speed applications. AMC installed the T5 in the following models: Ambassador, American (Rambler), AMX, Concord, Eagle, Kammaback, SX4, Gremlin, Hornet, Javelin, Marlin, Matador, Pacer Rebel and Spirit. The following Chevrolet models used the T5 Astro Van, Blazer S Series, Camaro, Chevette, S10. Ford Motor Company used the T5 in the Mustang, Thunderbird, plus Mercury Capri and Cougar. GMC utalized the T5 in the Jimmy S Series, S15, Safari Van. Honda installed the T5 in it's Passport. Isuzu Amigo, Pickup and Pup and Rodeo used the T5. Jeep installed the T5 in the Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, CJ2A, CJ3A, CJ5, Cj6, Cj7, CJ8, Jeepster, Scrambler and Wrangler. Nissan's 280ZX and 300ZX used this Borg Warner Transmission . Firebird, Trans Am and T1000 Pontiac used the T5.

if anyone cares, i am having a terrible time finding a 4wd tail housing for the t5, have pulled to tranys at the junkyard and failed both times, yeah don't ask me how..

Not getting much help I see. Here's what I had done to my T-5. Advance Adapter used to make the kit but ran out of good Jeep tailshafts for the swap so they discontinued the kit. Jeep tail shafthousing and the adapter to mate to your existing x-fer case. Just trying to give some encouragement. Don't know of many who have done the swap. Trouble with the Cheby T-5's is that instead of vertical mounting holes for trans the B.H, they are clocked 10-15 degrees to passenger side.

i found a chevy blazer 88 or 89 in the junkyard with a t5, if i took the transfer case and the tranny would i be better off?

Finally back to my tranny swap project, completely dissembled the 86' S-10 T5 Non World Class tranny today, I need just the tail housing but I figured I might be able to use some of the other parts.

The ID Tag was 13-52-108 making it a 3.76 gearset
1st – 3.76 2nd – 2.18 3rd – 1.41 4th – 1.00 5th – 0.72

double check your info. i know for a fact that T5 tranny's were never used in CJ2a, CJ3a, CJ5, or CJ6 jeeps. at least not as factory installed. hell, didn't even have T5's back then as we're talking the late 1940's thru the mid 60's. not saying they wouldn't mate up to the blocks they had back then, but they certainly didn't have that tranny then.
just my $.02.

Somebody who is more well versed in the T5, please tell me if I'm wrong. It appears the kit you bought is for a world class trans. And from what I remember, the bearings are different between the W/C and Non-W/C. Just something you might want to check into before you get ready to build it.

You are right, I have a WC T5 from a Tbird Turbo coupe that is getting the kit and a S10 NWC T5 I pulled at a junkyard for the tail housing and other parts.

Some of the differences between the two are in, syncho ring designs, design of the bearings counter gear vs tapered cup and cone, counter gear bearings are different, WC also uses needles under the reduction gear NWC don't.

any recommendations for great transfer cases that will mate up to the t5? junkyard gold please, dana 300 work, from what i recall it doesnt because of the output to the front axle.?

I've been reading your thread and I have a T5 and dana 300 that I bought for a 4x4 project I was working on. T5 in the jeeps were all NWC and ONLY came infront of a dana 300.

the way I understood it was there weren't interchangable parts between NWC and WC T5s. the NWC is strong enough for my application, and I was going to use the dana 300, but was looking into "reclocking" the Tcase to a L side output(dana 30 highpinion front). but this meant making my own Tcase shifters, lots of fab work but a good time to make it a 2 sticker:icon_thumby:

if you are planning any offroad abuse the T5 is not really a good choice. but its your money.

my application was only around 110hp diesel and a 2200lb vehicle in a larger vehicle wouldn't even consider a T5.

As of right now I am only using the tail housing from the NWC. Everything else is from WC.

I don't have the know how to reclock a dana 300 t-case, maybe down the road. I just want to get rid of the electric t-case and put something in that can handle some plowing.

My truck doesn't see any serious offroading just yet, the ford racing kit hopefully will do enough.
