Hi guys, this is my first post but i been doing alot of reading here and found alot of helpfull info. i just need some clarification on a few things...

first of all im working on a 86 ranger with v8-t5 swap. i installed the clutch and the car wouldnt go into any gear...it would just grind. long story short...i had to preload the clutch fork almost 2 inches(i didnt really mesure, just eye balled it) just so i can get it in gear with out grinding. is there a preload spec for the t5 tranny? also how do i know if the clutch is slipping or not? i dont wanna burn out another clutch.

anyone have a good way to test for clutch slip while driving?

thanks

Welcome first of all! What master and slave cylinder are you using? The clutch lever is actually only preloaded .100-.125". Sounds like the 2" you are talking about is just the excess slop before you make contact with the lever. I think the actual travel of the lever is 1.25-1.375" depending on which hole in the lever you use. Lots and lots of threads on the different set-ups. Maybe doing a search under "hydraulic" would get you in the right place.

Mine has a significant amount of preload, a couple inches, like you. Much of it may be free travel, who knows.
I just adjusted until I found the sweet spot, where it would go in gear without grinding and also not slip.

To detect clutch slip, hammer the throttle in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th gear. You'll notice right away if it's slipping! I have mine set as close to grinding as possible, if that makes sense, so that is as far away as possible from slipping.

I'm using a 1989-is 7/8" master cyl and a 1983 Ranger diesel external (3/4") slave cyl.

thanks for the help.

its got a stock master and CMC slave. its not really 2inches of slop, its more like i have to push the clutch fork foward two inches or so. also noticed my slave cylinder push rod only goes out 1inch when the clutch peddal is fully down. not sure if that correct or not.

im still new to this lol

Let us know about your truck.
If it's 90's or newer, you may have a 5/8" bore in the master cylinder which just won't work.
Mine wouldn't.
But try adjusting it.
