O.K. installing a new tps... can this be done with an analog volt/ohm meter or do I absolutely need digital ?

Does anyone have any step-by-step advice ? My truck is running really good and seems stronger than ever but the tps is the only sensor not replaced in the last year and I've had some stumbling cold starts lately & it seems to be running really rich.

Thanks for all the tips and advice in getting me this far. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. I'm hesitant to assume it's an injector because when it's warm it idles & runs perfectly, just very poor mileage. Cats have been checked & definately not clogged running into a new muffler & tailpipe.

Any thoughts ?

pull codes, your problem does not sound like a tps issue

Running rich seems to be an ongoing topic here. The three most common things suggested that I've seen are: 1. fuel pressure regulator - is there gas in the vacuum line going to it? 2. Engine coolant temperature sensor - is it the right resistance at temperature? 3. Ground wires - particularly the orange one from the back of the passenger side of the motor to the firewall. Maybe one of these will help.

FPR doesn't have any fuel in the vacuum line, but coolant temp sensor is a suspect since I just did a water pump recently & the engine DID overheat.

Is the orange ground you speak of inside the harness & grounding to the firewall ? What guage or thickness & any tips on where to start looking for it ? Improper ground sounds like a real bugger to pin down.

Oxygen sensor might also be a suspect since I did exhaust work as well. Really gotta get someone to pull the codes. Hard to diagnose something without the proper equipment I suppose, but I'm probably not the first one to try, huh ?

that ground wire comes from the passenger side head and goes straight into the harness, It's for the o2 sensor I believe

There are tables over at http://www.fordfuelinjection com so you can verify that it is bad before replacing.

It's about 14 guage and it is bolted to the back of the passenger side head

That would be recommended.

Thanks for the details holy. I didn't have a chance to answer and now I don't have to!

Definately got an appointment tomorrow with the code reader. Couple of questions tho..

1.Does the o2 sensor have a huge influence on air/fuel mixture ? ie. Making it run so rich &
2. Should I get a C.E.L. when I turn the key on, & then go out after starting ?

When I turn the key on I have a seatbelt icon & while I'm cranking I get a Check Oil that goes off after start up. That's it. Could a bad ground or connection in the instrument cluster cause EEC IV to act up I guess is what I'm getting at.

By the way, love this forum ! Soaking up info like a sponge... like my Ranger is soaking up gas right now !

yes, more so after it is warmed up to temp

yes
try the same thing with another vehicle...see what lights up and what goes off prior to and after starting. You may not have anything wrong here.
