T-Case Output Yoke

My 2000 4.0 4x4 5spd Ranger has a ping sound coming from the t-case output yoke. When I engage forward or reverse.

I found that Ford has a TSB on it to replace the t-case output flange with a revised design.

TSB: 99-16-1

Part# XL5Z-7b214-AA

Called the dealership and was told they no longer make that part and that there is no stock. Can I get one for a newer Ranger? Did they change the t-case design? The dealer ship was unsure and so very unhelpfull.

This is driving me nuts. I replace u-joints and greased the slip joint with no luck. Finally I had a buddy get under the truck as I rocked it back and forth and he could feel it in the yoke. Just a loud ping noise.

Somewhere around 2000 or 2001, I'm not sure of the year, they went to a slightly bigger bolt pattern on the flange and the earlier driveshaft will not bolt up. I had one of our parts guys look up that part # and it is obsolete but some dealers still show them in stock across the country. Your dealer could get it for you if they really wanted your business. Unfortunately it's a spendy piece. Our cost was $213.

Brutal! Thanks for the reply.

So I'm not sure what to do? Try and find a jy truck that had the tsb done to it? That will be alot of time wasted.

If I can work with the larger bolt pattern any later year truck should have the right yoke? Can I find these aftermarket somewhere?

Lots of time in the junkyards or live with the noise. I had the same issue on my '97 though and I know how annoying it can be. Maybe check with a transmission/gear shop?? We have a place in seattle called Valley Gear that supplies diff. gears, manual transmissions and t/cases etc. Not sure if you have access to something like that in your neck of the woods.

I can't live with the noise. It's embarassing and no need for it. Happens all the time now so it's getting worse.

$200 for a yoke is out of hand!

Seems to be one problem after another. Too bad I've always liked the Rangers but this sucks, maybe it's time to get rid of it?

200 bucks was OUR cost! By the time your dealer bought it, had it shipped and marked it up I wouldn't be surprised if it cost you 400 bucks! Pretty ridiculous. Some of the prices I see on parts everyday just blow my mind. The rear wheel bearing on a Lincoln LS requires you to buy the entire rear knuckle for $1000 If I couldn't work on my own vehicles, I seriously doubt I could even afford to own one. With the cost of the parts and the $100 an hour in labor I don't know how people do it. I wish you luck finding what you need.

Have you tried tightening the nut that holds the yoke on? Maybe try some blue Loctite on it and the yoke splines.

FWIW, my buddy's '93 Ranger once had a pretty loud driveshaft ping that occurred when you went forward from reverse & back. Took a few tries tightening it, though I think Loctite was what finally did the trick.

I'll give it a shot. Loctite 680 on the splines?

Do you know if the ones off a newer truck would be the revised ones?

The Loctite I used was the plain #242 stuff IIRC. I never did actually remove the yoke, though with the amount I used, I'm sure some did find it's way down into the splines (be sure to clean any oil residue off the threads with a spray solvent before applying the Loctite).

I certainly would think flanges off a newer truck should be revised ones, if a TSB had been issued for previous ones.
