t-170 shift lever

I currently have a t-18 in my ranger, and I want to swap it out for what I believe is a t-170. I was going to tackle it today, however when I set the shift lever down inside the tranny, I can't find any gears. The input and output shaft turn my hand. I'm not sure how to sit this lever in it to get it to go through the gears. There must be a proper method with lining it up that I am unaware of.

Any suggestions?
