what is this? what does it do? is it hard to replace? can i do it? how much does it cost? should i just buy a rebuild kit while im at it? where do i get one?
how hard is the tranny to remove and can i take the tranny out without removing the motor? :icon_confused:

yes, you can remove the tranny, without removing the motor, though it might almost be easier to remove the motor... it's a question if you want to do everything laying on your back, or standing...

i dont have a motor puller so... besides, i dont mind layin on my back to get the tranny out.

so, what bout that retaining spring?

no idea on that one, but i'm going to guess you should get a whole rebuild kit, as you will have the tranny open to get to the syncros...

we changed the clutch in my dad's f-150's t-5, i didn't do a whole lot of it, it was mainly him, and a family friend, that was about 6+ years ago, and to this day (actually talked about it with my dad about a week ago on the phone) swears he will never do another one again, without a shop and a hoist... they just put the truck up on a set of steel ramps, so there was like 2 feet under the truck in which to work... not much room IMO...

i would buy a set of 15 ton jack stands (4 of them) to do this, and lift the truck up as high on all 4 of them as you feel comfortable doing...

(15 ton are bigger and wider than your normal car ones, the width will give you more stability, and the height, well gives you more height...)

if i remember tomorrow, i'll take a couple pics of the stands i've got to show the difference in size

ok, thx much. i think ill ask my neighbor to do it (and let me help). my neighbor is a full time county mechanic. ill see if i can trade him a gun to do the work for me

this truck is already gonna be a pain in the ass and i dont even have it yet... but hell ill drive it till i get the money to fix it

you can do it yourself, (with a friend or 2) i would alot yourself 4 days to do this job, and you shouldn't have any major problems (unless there's cracked parts you need to back order from Foxtowncliff, New Californiana, or something)

it shouldn't be a 4 day challenge, but if for what ever reason it is, you've got it covered...

when i say shouldn't have any troubles, i mean time wise

haha... now im imagining selling my s10 and having a brand new tranny. or rebuilding the tranny and gettin a new crate long block from autozone

do it, sell the s-10 with fire!

or possibly sell it ON fire, i guess that makes more sense, doesn't it?

kill it with fire? i don't know....

It only took me and a buddy 14 hours to do the clutch and slave on my truck, and that was with a starter issue as well. Plus NYS rust. But we actually took the tranny out on the ground and used a lift to lift it away from the trans.

Taking the tranny out isn't too bad..biggest PITA is getting past the exhaust. Soak them bolts in PB Blaster for a few days prior to removal. But other than that, it's a matter for taking the driveshaft(s) off, pulling the shifter, starter, crossmember, speedo cable, and bellhousing bolts. Fairly straight forward.
