SwineFlu

Swine flu has killed about 150 people worldwide this year. Regular flu has already killed over 13,000. Why all the scare tactics?

the worst part of this whole thing being blown out of proportion like this is that it will cause the hog market to go in the crapper. then all of us hog farmers will loose money and these barns will sit empty for a while. it also gives us hog farmers a bad rap. i hate it.

It's all your fault!

Sorry, just a joke. People don't understand that they aren't going to get the flu from a pork chop. People are stupid. If the listen to ANY news report they could figure it out. I do feel sorry for the hog farmers. They are going to suffer for a poorly named virus. Hope you weather the storm.

Maybe The fed wants to avoid the impression that they didn't do enough post Katrina.

yeah man people gets the message the wrong way always!, thats because the media is more interested in creating chaos, just to get high ratings.
the same happens with the chicken flu, took like a year for us, hen farmers ( the hen produces eggs right? not the chicken) to convince ppl that that disease was NOT present in eggs , and that Honduras is free of the disease, now the hog farmers from here are having a hard time too, not mentioning the global recession stuff:annoyed: that thing is keeping me down from buying stuff for my truck :annoyed: :icon_twisted:

I'm going to eat some bacon this weekend. Bacon good!

because seasonal flu kills the very young, very old, or otherwise immunocompromised people

swine flu is killing young, otherwise healthy people. the current mortality rate for swine flu is about three times the standard flu that you're talking about

this first wave isnt the dangerous one. the second wave that comes along with seasonal flu is the one that could be bad

And it has only been out in force for what, two weeks?

the first infections happened much earlier, but it didnt hit mexico city until a couple weeks ago, so yes

it looks like it's beginning to die down a bit in mexico city

all in all, it's probably good that it hit the US in this wave. chances are those people will have some type of immunity to any second wave that might come.

who knows, but it's not overhyped. it's getting people thinking about how they might transmit flu and how that might affect other people

I like how now they want you to call it H5N1... What a stupid name. "My brother died yesterday." "Oh yeah? What from?" "H5N1". Maybe the media should have been showing that you don't get it from pork chops, sausage, or bacon (enter my avitar :D) as much as they were concentrating on showing the swine flu on every channel. I hope the hog farmers make it out of this ok. I enjoy bacon, sausage, ect.

EDIT: I also like how they were handing out all of those face masks, yet at the bottom of the screen on CNN it said "The CDC says that the spread of the Swine Influenza cannot be stopped" or something to that effect.

I know some people that are over reacting over all of this. I'm talking about hording food, water, weapons and the like. They think this is going to lead to anarchy and all of that kind of crap. If people would just use a little common sense and just keep their hands washed. Don't touch their nose, mouth and eyes until they wash their hands while out in public and be aware of anuone coughing or sneezing. Keep themselves hydrated and go to their doctor if they develope symptoms so they can be treated within 48 hours. Things will workout. In the medical field we have "Universal Precautions" that we are suppose to follow to keep from infecting ourselves and our patients. It's worked for me for the last 35 years (yes, even through the 1976 Swine Flu scare). Just be alert because the world needs more lerts.
