Good Morning first time in Forums, this is a great site and I’ve read allot of documents in the Library before purchasing my used Ranger just a week ago. So, it’s an “XL” with the OEM Pioneer Boomer AM/FM - PN: 6L5T-18K810-AA. I’m looking at an OEM Pioneer Boomer 6-CD with MP3 from a salvaged ’06 Ranger – PN: 6L5T-18C815-AD. I’ve read the posted article about removal of the old unit but I do have a couple of questions. From what I’ve read I “think” the existing OEM setup only has (2) speakers, no separate Amp to drive a sub and no harness capabilities for (2) additional speakers and a sub. I am flying out the 23rd to Akron to take delivery of the truck, if I purchased the salvaged unit would it be a simple swap-out & still provide me the capability (although limited) to listen to CDs on the two speakers, it’s a 948 mile trip or am I kidding myself, as in nothing’s simple. After my return I’d go to the next step and install a new harness, purchase additional speakers, a sub and amp to get the full capabilities of the new unit. Any input would be appreciated

does the truck not have a HU in it???

and swapping out a HU is not very hard maybe 30 min. but id leave it alone if it has one in it.

my 06 sport had 4 speakers. dont know the difference between the XL and the Sport

HHHHiiimmm..... "HU", beyond my capacity. The current unit in the '06 is a plain jane AM/FM and that's it.......... I have taken unit out in other vehicles using the bent hanger rather than buy the special tool, I'm just wondering if the connectors will match up although not wired for a SUB and (2) additional speakers...........

I swapped mine out in my 01 Ranger in about 30 seconds...

you probably will want to take the original wiring harness with the radio you are swapping in since the truck that will be recieving the radio doesnt have wiring provisions for rear speakers or a sub. that way the wires will be there on the plug and youll just have to run your own wires from the speakers (if you plan to add more) to the back of the HU plug.

Thanks for the information. I've been looking at the Wiring Diagrams for the Ranger vs. the Ranger Audiophile with 4 speakers and a sub. I understand I will have to get another harness to support the additional speakers and a sub. Am I to gather from your response that I will be abale to do a quick swap-out after picking it up and prior to my long drive and the new unit should work and allow me to play CDs but the output may be limited becasue I only have two speakers & no sub. The DIN connector looks to be the same pin-out. This will only be temporary until I get it homew then the new harness wil be installed.

i believe that is correct. the install should be straight forward and should play cds but only out of the 2 speakers that you have until you hook up additional ones.
