how much trouble would it be to swap out the 1999 3.0 for a 1996 3.0. would the engine harness have to be changed or any thing else need to be done. i am somewhat less than a beginner. all help appreciated

Welcome to TRS :)

Yes, you would have to swap upper and lower intakes to match wiring, fuel pressure and air intake, but fairly easy wrench work

Check oil pan to see if they match, and also a good idea to change oil pan gasket because they like to leak and hard to get at with engine in the vehicle
New oil pump if pan is off is not a bad idea either
And new rear main seal, always when any engine is out

3.0l also has a known issue for the timing chain cover leaking coolant, with engine out its easy to put in a new gasket now, just as preventative maintenance
