My first post on here. I have always found my answer in older threads, but I see nothing here.
I have a 2001 2wd Ranger with a 3.0 and a manual transmission. It is pretty gutless.
I have a 4.0 ohv out of a 1999 explorer. Looking at both I do not see any big differences. The connectors look the same as does the bell housing.
Am I missing anything

Appreciate the help.

Welcome to TRS :)

Yes you are missing alot, looks were deceiving in this case

No, the bell housings do not match
No, the wiring is different as is the computer that runs the engine

Swap requires engine and transmission change, computer and engine wiring harness change.
Plus power and ground cable match ups, and PATS

Same as swapping in a V8, so.....................
Sell the '99 explorer and buy a V8 explorer as donor
Same work better results and a sellable Ranger when you are done
V8 Ranger is something some one will buy
3.0l/4.0l converted Ranger is not, since you can buy factory 4.0l Ranger

3.0l has 150HP
4.0l OHV 160HP
5.0l V8 has 215HP

So the biggest reason not to do the 3.0l to 4.0l swap is that you can buy a 4.0l Ranger already done by Ford factory
Sell the 3.0l Ranger and buy a 4.0l Ranger, or go with a V8 swap

Ron, thanks for the information. Very helpful. I live in Utah and not sure how to get around their emission laws as far as swapping in a v-8.
I also have not found a 2wd 4.0 5 speed and I am not sure if Ford made one.

I live in Utah as well and have done many engine swaps.

Most of the time you are okay, provided the vehicle retains all the emissions equipment that came from the factory on the original vehicle. So if your 3.0 had an egr system, then the 4.0 or 5.0 will also need to have a functioning egr.

This will also depend on who is doing the emissions inspection and if they care to check everything.

You can find the exact specifications on the laws on the highway patrol website.

Not sure if a 4.0 2wd 5 speed was a factory option that year, but I've seen other years with that combo. The easiest route would be to find a donor vehicle with the engine, trans, harness, computer and dash that you'll need and swap everything over.

"The car store" in Twin Falls, ID, shows they have a 1999 Ford Ranger 2WD manual trans 4.0l
But silly expensive IMO at $5,995 even with only 133,250k miles

VIN shows correct X in 8th digit for 4.0l OHV
