Here's what I did, I hope that someone can help me out with some info.
I replaced a transmission on a ranger 2001 3.0 because it was run low on oil for about six weeks and the bearing were shot. A friend of mine donated a transmission out of a ranger 1998 motor unknown. There was a difference in the casing. The original had an arc on the top of the transmisson, and the replacement had a straight drop from the two top holes (where it attaches to the motor.) for about six inches then it started to curve to the bell shape. My guess is that this was from a 2.3 litre engine. I visually checked all the gears and such and they "looked" identical. I swapped all the guts form the "new" transmission, bearings, gears; everything. I put it all together and it felt a little tight when I tried to turn it by hand but I thought it might be lack of enough oil.
Well now that it is installed, all gears go in, but first and second have to be forced in when starting from a dead stop. Sometimes they will work well when downshifting, I took all the time in the world to assemble it properly I could not find any information that would tell me if the interior components are different (other than gear ratios,) if its the same transmission in a different case. http://www.therangerstation.com/for...ngerstation.com/forums/images/icons/icon5.gif
