would a 4 cylinder with the tranny bolt up to a 4x4 94 ranger that has a 4.0?

swap from a 4.0 to a 4 cylinder?

The 4 cylinder won't bolt to the V6 transmission, the bolt patterns on the bell housings are different. If you have the transmission too, it will bolt to the transfer-case if it's a 4x4 tranny.

alright, how hard would it be to replace the 4.0 automatic tranny with the standard 2.3 tranny?

Your best bet would be to find a wrecked 4 cyl ranger and go from there. You do realize that you are going backwards....right? Most people want the 4.0!
