I have a 1993 3.0L 2wd Ranger with manual tranny. It's got 225k miles on it and so i figured it's time to swap the engine. I came across a deal on a '92 4x4 manual Ranger which had a '92 4.0L Explorer engine in it. I have come to realize that the swap is going to be more difficult than I anticipated, and am rethinking my options.
After pulling the engine and rebuilding it (just finished putting the heads on) I am realizing that the wiring is very different between the '92 and '93, since I'm working with two different generations of Rangers. The biggest difference, other than the distributorless 4.0L, is that the '93 only has one big wiring harness in the driver's side firewall (big round thing) whereas the '93 has an additional harness on the passenger side where the computer is. I bought a set of electrical diagrams for both engines and it appears that I won't be able to do the swap without a lot of cutting and splicing, but even then I can't be sure that it will work.
Loving my Ranger so much, I really don't want to cut it all up without even knowing if it will work.
Option 1:
Go ahead with the swap, having to cut and splice lots of wiring and harnesses. I've got all the wiring schematics, but it doesn't look easy. I don't want to do this because it may not work and i won't be able to "undo" and go back to the original. Any thoughts on how to do this painlessly?
Option 2:
Buy a 1993 4.0L engine wiring kit and go ahead with the swap. This would be perfect, but I don't know where I would get a wiring kit... maybe the dealer? I haven't looked into this much yet. If anyone has done this, let me know, cause this would be perfect.
Option 3:
Finish rebuilding the 4.0L (gotta do that anyway) and sell it. Then begin to look for a 1993 Ranger with a 4.0L engine! I hate to do this after all this work, but this really would be the least problematic option.
If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. The biggest thing would be where to find a 93 4.0L wiring kit so I don't have to cut up my original wiring. Thanks! Sorry it's such a long post!
