this is what my cousin did driving home and hit something. im thinking its a broken upper balljoint and/or upc or bottom balljoint. want to get some input from you guys. its an 01 ranger xlt 2x4 coil suspension. any input would be greatly appreciated.

looks like you're on the right track.....how about the tie-rod being damaged also....

yea im gonna jack it up in a couple days and check it out. nothing physically snapped so its not completely obvious so im not sure if i should get a whole knee assembly or start at the uca with ball joint for 60 bucks at oreilleys and go from there.

If the upper ball joint was broke, wouldn't the truck be undriveable? I figure the inside of the rim would be touching the control arm if that happened. I'd say something just came loose or maybe the camber bolt went wacky. :dunno:

ended up being a completely shattered hub and wheel bearing. the only thing holding the wheel on was the caliper bracket and the castle nut. fantastic......but cheap fix, about 60 bucks and were all good.

ok so more problems, what was left of the wheel bearing has basically fused itself to the spindle and will not come off. my question is can the spindle be pressed out and a new one put in, and if not, will the 95-02 explorer spindle be the same? im looking at junk yards and just trying to see what parts are interchageable from other fords with what i need. any help is greatly appreciated.
also, will the ranger oem rotor bolt up fine to the explorer if it will work.

looks like he either bent a upper / lower control arm or the wheel alignment setting slipped, due to the hold down bolts not holding the adjustment. which is good in a way, as it may of prevented the control arms from receiving damage. look at the control arm attachment points to see if you can see a non painted/rusty area next to where the control arms are attached to the frame. the uppers may be attached with a bar on top of the frame (i'm not sure how ford assembled your model of truck). the bar is attached to the frame with two bolts and at the ends are where the control arm is attached. those two bolts may of allowed the movement. if the bottom is adjustable it could be an offset bolt pivot. very unlikely it would of moved, more likely the control arm was bent.
take the truck to a wheel alignment shop nearby and have it inspected for damage and repaired. remember your insurance may help with the damages after the deductable...

i already stated that the problem was the wheel bearing assembly. everything else suspension wise is ok. i have everything together now except for the caliper, i got a new spindle but the caliper bracket will not bolt back into the oem locations on the spindle, the rotor is not any bigger but the part number from the old spindle is different from the new one. is there anyone who has a picture of the 97 and older spindle that can be posted up? i want to see if it matches what i have now, the spindle number is f87a 3105-ae. i have the 14-1002 caliper bracket and it is the wrong one, anyone have an idea which is the correct bracket number i need? thanks!

You WILL need the same caliper bracket as the 4wd models.

I had this issue on mine and discovered that the AP stores stock the caliper with the wrong bracket.

I took my old bracket with me and they took a correct bracket off the shelf (free) and sent me on my way.

i have currently bought or matched up the cardone 14-1002 which is the one originally on the truck which no longer fits with the new spindle. the dorman version is listed as a replacement of that model 14-1002 also. i have not tried the actual brand dorman but id imagine its the same anyway and wont fit. i have also tried the older 95-97 style 14-1053 which is smaller even than the current one i have. im lost. heres a picture of the difference maybe you guys know. the part number for the 4x4 is listed as the same model number as i tried already.

as you can see in the pictures that the one i need is for the one on the left, for which i need a taller bracket to clear the rotor. 14-1002,14-1053, and 619111 do not fit. and it definetely came off a 2wd 98-00 ranger because i physically saw the truck it came off of.

after checking multiple forums, google, etc. i discovered that 98-00 has an option for a 10.25" rotor and a 14" rim. I had the 11.25" rotor. i put on the new rotor and the original caliper and bracket, 14-1002 and everything is good again and the truck is back running.
