Suppose I wanted separate turn signals in the rear...

The 1993–2012 Ranger taillamps all had (or appear to have) the same shape, so physically they will fit. The lenses and light functions were different depending on year.

The brake lamps and turn signals use the same bulb filament behind a red lens for 2006–2012. Suppose I wanted separate amber rear turn signals on my 2011. The 1993–1997 taillamps are closest in appearance to the ones on the truck now, except for having an amber portion below the backup lens, so I'd use those. That area on the 2006–2012 units is a red reflector.

In the South American markets where amber turn signals were required, on most versions of the 2006–2010 Rangers the US taillamps were used with the turn signal replacing the backup lamps, which apparently were not required. The clear backup lens was still used, but an amber-coated bulb was inside for the signal. I still want backup lamps, needless to say.

Clearly it would be necessary to run a separate set of wires to the new taillamps for the turn signals, but the turn signals/4–way flashers would also have to be separated from the brake lamps. What modifications in the control modules, fuses, etc., would be necessary to make this work properly? Or would this be a royal pain and I should forget about it?

Thanks.

You’ve got 2 relatively easy options...

1) Buy a 2 to 3 wire trailer light converter like pictured below.

2) Run new wiring to the tail lights. Rewire the stop lights off the 3rd brake light circuit and pull the rear turn signal power from the front turn signal circuit.
This may require relays on some or all 3 circuits depending on amp draw.
