G’ day, I want to build a Ford 4-Cylinder 2.0 or 2.3L engine in a “stock” condition. What I mean by “stock” is that I am not looking for maximum horsepower but more for reliable every day street use. I want to keep it as simple as possible and at the same time add to the exterior looks with some “performance parts” like chrome or aluminum valve cover, tube type exhaust manifold, carburetor intake manifold and etc. This will be a rear wheel drive with a C4 transmission and will be mounted in a new Model T chassis.

What year range offers the best selection of used engines and sources for the add on performance parts? I would also appreciate a list of companies that offer after market performance parts. Thanks in advance for your help, ThomasT

use the 2.3 with the auto trans, any of them are a good bet, if your going carb and dont want to spend a lot go with an early 82 to 85 there are some later ones with carbs but most have fuel injection, I perfer the 86 to 88 blocks, or buy a later one with a roller cam and buy an after market carb and manifold there is a ton of info in the 4 cyl. tech forms here that will help you make a real informed decision even at about 1600 pounds of weight the 4 bang will need a little boost in power due to the c-4 there are a ton of after market parts and it can be made dead nuts reliable even with some mods

Thanks Road Angles for you help. After all that I have read, the 2.3 seemed to be the way for me to go. To keep it simple and "older" looking I do want to use a carb setup so I will try to find the engine first and then the correct mamifold. Again thanks.

For a everyday driver I would get a 89-94 block with a small journal crank, put a 98 2.5 crank in it(longer stroke)put a stage 1 or 2 cam in it from Esslingers or racer walsh, get a dist.from a 2.3,get a Schoenfeld header, put a 88 intake on it,get a carb adapter from esslingers for a two barrel carb(you can also get a 4 barrel)a 350 two barrel holley carb. You can get a nice fabricated alum.valve cover from speedway motors or try to find one from ford motorsports(Getting kind of rare.)Makes a nice motor, good torque and hp and reliability.

G' day 4b316, this sounds real good. I will look up each item that you suggested and review the specs. I have an old Field Truck Cab that I have to sell to make room in my small shop, so I do have some time to put together as much information as I can. I really do appreciate your help.

4B forgot to mention that you also need a head off a 90 or older mustang, or 88 or older ranger with the d-shaped intake port.. I would not personally use the 86-90 intake. I did this on my ranger and it hardly runs at less than 3000 rpm. If you are going to DD it, you should use a D-port carb intake. It will not need an adaptor to run the Holley carb. I would suggest a spacer though.
