I am going to be swapping a 2.9L from a 86 Ranger into my 1962 Scout. I was looking for some advice on changing exhaust system from the 4 cyl to the V6. As far as I can tell by doing some general measurements, clearance really is not going to be an issue. I should have the engine next week and then I will know for sure what all I have. I was told that I would be getting the O2 sensor(s), and about six inches of the pipe off each manifold to include the portion that bolts to the manifolds. As far as anything else in the exhaust system I do not know if I am going to be getting any of it. Now for a few questions.

1) The O2 sensor(s) are used by the ECM for the injection system, correct? So they are going to be required to put in, correct?

2) I have search and come to the conclusion that 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 inch pipe is the ideal size to go with. Correct me if I am mistaken.

3) Would it be better to come down from the manifolds to a Y-pipe and then run a single exhaust back from there, or to do a true dual exhaust?

4) As the Scout never came with cats on it, should this be something that I add in as I am building my exhaust? Would it cause performance issues to not have cats? Would I be legally required to have cats?

5) Would going with a straight pipe system be too loud? Would it be better to go with glass packs or another type of muffler?

6) I have been thinking about either dumping the exhaust out the side in front of the axle or just following the frame and dumping it straight out the rear. Are either of these ideas better than the other, or would they work about the same?

I think that is about it at this time. Thank you for your patience in reading this as I know it is fairly long.

(1)Yes, you need to keep the one oxygen sensor that the 2.9L uses for fuel management.

(2) Yes 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 is a good size to stick to.

(3) A Y pipe is definitely the way to go as it helps with exhaust scavenging which actually helps performance. I wouldn't do a true dual set up on any 6 cylinder its just sounds shitty.

(4)Cats are up to you. I would do a single high flow cat after the Y pipe just to help keep emissions down and will NOT hurt performance any. Since the vehicle never came with them you will be fine legally without them.

(5)A straight pipe set up will be a bit louder and will be quite raspy sounding (it's all personal preference here tho) I prefer a muffler like a Flowmaster 40 or super 44 series.

(6) I would just go straight out the back, exhaust gasses can be quite corrosive and cause rust to start on the underside if left to dump there all the time.

Best of luck! Sounds like a fun project.

If you want the flow of true dual and sound y-pipe run off the headers into an X pipe so you keep the best of both worlds........

Personally, don't do cats if you don't have to, they're expensive and restricting, thats why all my friends have cut them off..........
