Ok I just got everything wired up for my new amp, and im completely new to this subwoofer thing. My sub, which is temporary, is 160 watts, I have an amp that is 260 rms. I can turn the gain all the way up with no distortion. I would think that with such a small sub, it should have distortion at that level. Is something wrong with the settings?

No bass boost.
Low pass freq. Set at 100 hz.
Mode is on low pass.
Gain all the way up, clockwise.
Sensitivity on 100mV-2V

Everything, to me, looks good.

160W amp is tiny. What is the wattage and rms on your sub? If you can turn the gain all the way up and get no distortion, you are more than likely under powering your sub and are safe. What is the brand of your amps?

260 watt boss amp rms. 160 watt sub.

Is the amp a mono bloc or multiple channel? Also is your sub single or dual voice coil?

Mono. And the voice coil idk. I read on Google that it could be the settings in the actual head unit.

I mean, it still has plenty of bass, I don't like crazy window shattering bass, but enough to feel the song lol.

Unless you're sub us dual voice coil (does it have 2 sets of terminals?) Your amp is likely not reaching it's max RMS watts. Most mono amps are better with 2 subs. A 2 channel amp bridged is usually better for 1 sub. I know it sounds backwards. It's all about the impedance.

Idk my amps and subs well, it's a boss riot r1100m if that helps. I'm going to get a better sub sometime, so maybe that will help.

According to Boss, it's actually 1100w (max). It's only 413W at 4 ohm. It jumps up to 825W at 2 ohm. So now I'm curious what the sub is. You could easily add a second sub if they were both 4ohm. I know that's not what you're going for, but it's an option if you ever want to. Right now you're only using half of its potential.

1100 when lightning strikes lol. It says 250w x 1 rms @4 ohms.

I don't know the exact specifications of the sub, I'd say it's about a 6 inch, around 160 to 200 watts, 6 ohms max.

Forgive me as I have no idea what I'm talking about, I don't know my electricity stuff lol

I know this is old but I've been poking around the forum since I've decided to bring my Ranger back to life. I was big into subs years ago so I'll add in some info.

First off, your gain is not a volume knob as it appears your using it. To set your gain, turn the volume up on the headset to almost max. Then turn your gain up on your amp until it starts distorting. Then turn it back a hair.

You definitely need more info on your sub so that you may wire it to get the most out of your amp.

Amps are designed to work at a certain ohm. Your Boss amp (I remember them being fairly cheap) may only work at 4 ohms. It should list what ohm it is stable to. If it's stable to 2 ohm, then you could wire your sub accordingly.

If you do only have a 6" sub, most likely an 8", don't expect much bass from only one.

Obviously the gain isn't a volume knob.

This is the information that I can find about the sub.

Sony MHCG-X45 Sub woofer

Continuous RMS power output (reference):

120 watts (6 ohms at

60 Hz, 10% THD)

Total harmonic distortion less than 0.07% (6 ohms at

60 Hz, 60 W)

I now have the gain at around half after i messed with the settings on the head unit. It sounds great!

You can watch this video: https://youtu.be/lIAKxuiLtxw to see my setup.

Don't mind the other annoying things i said in it lol. Still getting used to being a YouTuber.

Is this a house sub?

The looks of it and the specs make me think so..I apologize if I'm wrong.

At 6 ohms, you're probably drawing 250-300 watts out of your amp.

I'm assuming this sub is also a single voice coil thus limiting your wiring options to be able to draw more juice out of the amp. You need to bring the ohms down to draw more power.

According to the amp specs, you want to be at 2 ohms for best performance. With that said, a dvc (dual voice coil) sub with 2 4 ohm voice coils wired in parallel if I recall correctly, basically both positives and both negatives connected together will give you 2 ohms.

Hope this helps..
