How can you find out what size fuel tank is on your truck?

I've always wondered why my truck can be on less than an 1/8 of tank and only hold 13 gallons. When I bought the truck, new, the window sticker said it had a 20 gallon tank but has never even come close to hitting that at the pump.

Never thought to ask about it, here, until now. :icon_confused: :icon_confused:

if im not mistaken i think it should be a 16.5 gallon tank..

Your owner's manual should tell you, if you still have it.

Yeah, I still have the owner's manual. I even still have the window sticker... somewhere.

The level sender is purposely calibrated to tell you the tank is empty well before it's actually empty. I drove for 3 days (14 miles a day) with the needle on E and I still only put 13.5 gallons in my 15 gallon tank. It's so that you think you are out and go get gas instead of running dry on accident.

Put a couple of gallons of gas in a can... stick it in the back of the truck.. run the truck dry.. put the gas in and then fill'er up at the closest station. That'll tell ya exactly what it will hold.
Just don't leave the gas can sitting outside in the heat.. it'll cause condensation to form in the can, then you've just added an all new problem.

I've always been told that running that low on gas is bad news for your fuel pump. It has to work harder and thus heats up more.

My gas light comes on when I have like 3 or 4 gallons left. THe gauge will be just a tad above E.

I was hoping AllanD would have chimed in here to talk about his gasoline tanker her drives around and calls a ranger. But I agree with putting a gas can in the back and driving it empty to see where your needle really sits when you're empty so that you know.

You have been told correctly. It's a bigger problem when you have 2 pumps (one as an in-tank transfer pump and one a high-pressure 'feed' pump).

The pump uses that same fuel that it's pumping for cooling itself. No (or reduced) cooling equals more heat equals premature failure. Obviously as long as the pump is sending fuel to the engine, it's not heating up, but when you start sucking air, that's a problem.

can`t you go to the ford website and enter your vin number and get all that information from the factory just a suggestion.

06+ you can get the window sticker

otherwise, you can email for and they will send you a copy of the build sheet. just search build sheet on here and there will be a thread telling you what to do.
