I had a friend change the wheel bearing on my truck a couple weeks ago while I was at work. He ended up putting the inner wheel bearing on backwards and the tire came off when he went to test drive it. When that happened it smashed the bottom of the fender(I am looking for a fender by the way) and the rotor and everything slipped off the axle. When that happened it broke the little plastic cream or yellow 4x4 piece that slides out to engage the fourwheel drive so i rigged it to fit. But now that the snow has came I fond out that the fourwheel drive is not working at all!!!(yes the fourwheel drive worked before) Neither front tire is spinning, is this caused just from the one little piece to not make either of them work? What do I need to get to fix it? I was told you can not buy the plastic piece by itself, you have to buy the whole 4x4 assembly, which is like 250 and some odd dollars. Unless I go to the junkyard. But what do I need to do, because I got stuck just pulling out of my driveway.. no fourwheel drive sucks... not cool.

both hubs have to lock or the differential will just spin the non loaded axle. The plastic cam pushes the hub into lock position so if it's broken the hub cannot lock. Theres a thread on here where a guy welded an auto hub into the lock position, If you can find it you could ask him how it's working out.

WTF? How can you put a wheel bearing on backwards? Obviously he DIDN'T have a clue what he was doing and should NEVER be allowed to touch another vehicle. That shit can get people killed.

The best option would be a set of manual hubs. Check you local yards. Any 90-97 Ranger or 91-94 Explorer would do.

Ya the plastic cam was damaged a little at the base but i made it fit back on. Maybe theres not enough of it left to lock.

And yes I know, how dumb can you be!?!?

it's not so much the putting it on backward that baffles me, but the fact that he could put it in backward and not notice something was wrong.

wow

I wouldn't have thought there would be enough threads exposed on the spindle with the bearing backwards.
But anyway, your best bet is to contact AllanD. He has a thread in Parts for Sale for Manual hubs for $90 shipped I believe.

So tell us again why you thought it was a good idea to let him do this? Did he proclaim he knew what he was doing? Find another hub in the junkyard and then throw the broken one at him.

Umm... yes he claimed he knew what he was doing, and i had work the next day so I left the truck at his house. Sad thing is, he works at an autoshop. And it was the outter bearing that was in backwards, so must have not got tight enough. And yes the old hub should be thrown at him!
