Stupid filler neck.

Ok, I'm tired of fighting this thing. The stock filler neck gave out after 15 years and was barfing fuel every time I filled up, so I replaced it with a new filler neck/tube. The first time I filled the truck up after replacing it, it worked great. Filled right up to 100% and clicked the gas pump off. no problem.

Fast forward 2 weeks, and now I can't get more than .00001 gallons in before it clicks off, and it takes forever to fill the truck halfway. I've checked the tube, no kinks, still secured tightly to the tank, the filler tube is fine as well. no blockages.

Is there any reason I *shouldn't* just pull the inner filler tube out, and fill with the larger tube? I've tried every trick I can find to "un-kink" this thing but it's not even kinked or pinched or bent to begin with. Help!

Interesting. I hope someone can help you cause my dads f150 has the same problem.

Had this problem on a customer's kia sorento, turned out to be the charcoal filter had come apart- pieces ended up in the tank and it must have clogged the venting system. His was kicking off after a gallon or so then would give him a gas bath after it clicked off- gas shooting out after building up pressure during refill. I'd make sure the vents are open with compressed air and that the evap system isn't kinked up or clogged.

Wellllll that just sounds like a whole helluva lot of fun to change. :icon_rofl:

Thanks for the help. If I remember right the charcoal can on the ranger is under the rear of the bed, just in front of the spare tire?

I'm not sure exactly. They used to keep them under the hood driver's side years ago, they may have moved them back under the bed. And ya, it isn't really a filter but a cannister as you stated. That Kia's went into the tank and clogged up the pick up holes under the fuel pump- so it would "run out of gas" at just below half a tank. Made us scratch our heads for a bit...

Your 97 has teh charcoal canister right behind the drivers side headlight. pretty easy to get to. check all the hoses and the valves that connect to it.,

Ah, thanks! Would this cause the truck to have a slight smell of gas around it? Usually when I get out I can just catch a hint of it.

Ah. I may have found the culprit. The previous owner appears to have disconnected the "Fuel vapor valve" on the fuel tank for some reason (wtf). I noticed the connector didn't have a hose plugged into it when I had the bed off to replace the filler, but I didn't think anything of it.

Good find! Let us know if it fixed it...

Oh it's going to be a while before I have the time or money to get it fixed... are there any tricks to filling the tank as it is?

Not that I'm aware of. Slo is about it...

Ah well. Bummer. Looks like the previous owner also disabled the check engine light. :icon_confused: So much for honesty...
