Hey guys I've got a big problem with the tranny in my Ranger. Its a 2WD 88 model, with the 2.0 engine and the 5-speed manual. Well the other day I was messing around and shifting with no cluch (hard) when I went from 2nd to 3rd the shift went all the way up and the knob almost hit the dash. The truck as stuck in neutral so I was able to pull over, the shift was stuck tight in place and after i yanked on it for a while i was able to move it down a bit and now it seems to be stuck in (I think) 4th gear. I pulled it home because i didnt want to destroy the clutch trying to get home. The shifter can be moved a little now but now much and its still closer to the dash than it should be. I tried to get it out of 4th but I had no luck. Does the transmission have internal damage or is there something wrong with the shift linkage maybe? It did this once before a few years ago but i was able to pull the shifter away from the dash and then everything was fine. Thanks a lot for any help you guys can give me. I wish I would just learn to take it easy on the old Ranger, if I would, none of this would have happened.

Any help would really be appreciated guys, I have to work the next couple of weeks so tommorrow and sunday will be my only chance to work on it for a while. I just thought maybe you could guys could give me some things to look for before I start. Thanks.

Repairable transmission problems are generally whines or other noises, or perhaps a LITTLE difficulty getting into gear (though that's usually the clutch). By the time the transmission DOESN'T WORK, it's quite likely to be a boat anchor.

In your case, one or more shafts is probably loose. Or perhaps the 4th gear blocking ring broke and wedged in. Both are VERY bad.

You can tear it apart to look at it if you really want to, but it's extremely unlikely to be cost effective compared to replacing it with a junkyard transmission.

This is the consequence of "power shifting." No transmission is designed to take that; you have to do it perfectly. You didn't.

Well I got it fixed today, the linkage was just bound up a little but I got it installed back in right.

So, explain how that makes your shift "almost hit the dash."

There is something more than that wrong with your transmission.

unless i misread, he was floating the gears, shifting without clutch, its done by alot of truck drivers, not power shifting. power shifting is when u shift but keep the go fast pedal to the floor,

sounds like he did what i did, by jamming the tranny when he shouldnt have, (mine was clutched but going into gear harder, he did no clutch but same result, im diggin into tranny tomorrow, maybe monday, and im gonna look at the shift forks where the pins are that shear off real easy. ill let yall know what i find.
