Occasionally when I start my Ranger I'll get a loud noise that sounds like can of stones being shaken. This only happens when it hasn't been started for a while and the noise only last for a half a second at most. Any ideas?

may need a little more info! where is the sound coming from? If it's a SOHC maybe chain tension-er not common but possible

What kind of oil filter do you use? Some oil filters do not have an anti-drain valve and lets the oil drain back into the pan. It takes the oil pump longer to build up pressure when you start it. Your hydraulic lifter could be draining off oil and are not pumping up until the oil pump gets oil to them. This would be more of a problem after the engine has not run for a while.

Even if you have a good oil filter the lifters could still lose pressure after sitting a while and cause the noise you are hearing.

The sound is coming from the engine or transmission ( it happens so fast it's really hard to tell ). I'm using a Motorcraft FL-820S filter.
