strange noise

My wife's Escape is making a noise. It sounds like a faint horn noise coming front somewhere in the back of the SUV. It is a 4X4 3.0L with a little over 100K miles.

maybe a dried seal thats whistling?
or maybe the rear bearings are worn.

It literally sounds like a constant faint horn sound.

O.K. I realized that I left out a very important piece of info. The Escape is parked when you here this noise. The engine is running and the tranny is in park.

that helps a lot..... uhm.... no idea, but could be a moving object rubbing or thats loose or vibrating.

the reason i asked about the location is that it sounds,from your description, like a hum from a factory subwoofer which is behind the right rear panel.it could also be a shorting relay.the power lock relays are behind the left rear panel.if you can pinpoint the area it is coming from it could point to one of these causes.

I haven't been able to pinpoint the exact location. It is behind me and I here it just as loud while inside or outside of the vehicle. The only thing that I thought of is maybe a vacuum leak but I don't know if it uses vacuum to engage the 4WD. I did notice it after going down a road with loose gravel.
