OK, here is what it does; when you first turn on the key you get a fuel pump whine and all is good. But lately all goes well for awhile and then it just dies. Driving or at an idle, if I try to restart it I get no fuel pump whine and it tries to run but wont. If I let it sit for 5 minutes or so, whine and starts right up. There is no time or milage relationship in between the dying. Sometimes it will go for days with no problem, or it will die 2 or 3 times a day. I went online looking at pump/sending units to replace it with (my guage doesnt work either) and there telling me I have 2 pumps.......where is the second one. I'm thinkin that I have alot of crap in the tank and I'm plugging the fuel sock, after it sits and the line preasure drops, the crap falls off the sock and it will run again.

Any thoughts?

There is one in the tank(part of the sending unit) and one on drivers side frame rail(under the cab). There is also a filter between the main fuel pump(on frame rail) and the injector rail. The one in the tank supplies low pressure to the main which supplies the high presure to the injector rail. Try changing the main filter (under the truck). Your idea about the filter sock in the tank is valid also. I seem to remember another component just before the main pump(tank side), I'm not real sure but look anyway.

Don't forget to relieve system pressure before disconnecting the fuel line.
