I want to straight pipe my 04 ranger for the added benefit of sound and performance. I read that it will screw the computer up to take the cats out. I wondered if there was a programer to change this since they make them for bigger trucks and ive been looking into programers anyway. Any1 know??

It is illegal to remove cats and asking about such a thing will get your thread locked in one big hurry on here.

I've run my 00 Ranger without a muffler (it fell off during driving). The sound was really cool and awesome for about the first 15 minutes tops. Then it got annoying. Then it got really irritating. You had to run the stereo at nearly full volume with the windows up to hear it over the racket. No thanks, I jury rigged a cheap Thrush Turbo III muffler on it and while it's not the best, it's much nicer than open pipes, IMHO.

My choptop has a high-flow cat and Flowmaster 40 series muffler, not real loud at idle but when you get on it, it sounds pretty nice and gets fairly loud.

If you want really loud, throw some glasspacks on, but I don't think I'd do it on one of mine.

on top of it being highly illegal, there are no performance gains to be had by removing the cat converters. all your going to do is make more noise and annoy your neighbors.

yeah. if anything just take off the muffler

IIRC, federal law states that if your vehicle came from the factory with a cat and a muffler, it must have both on the vehicle for road use.

My kid took his off of a 2004 mustang several years ago. That thing stunk so bad you wouldn't believe it- he could leave the garage and two hours later it would make your eyes water to walk through there. I begged him to put them back on and he finally did. Smelled like a briggs and scrapiron lawnmower engine running WAAAAAAAAY too rich. Nasty...

Yea my Dad's Cobra has an off road X pipe, it makes the whole house stink when he starts it in the Garage, that and driving behind that car sucks big time too.

You can take off the muffler but I'd bet the noise would get to you after a while. I put a Gibson cat-back on my Sport Trac and it's pretty loud even with the muffler. I did pick up 3 mpg on the highway with it. So I'd tell you to put on a Gibson system or fab up something using a Flowmaster 2 chamber if you want it loud.

Don't you guys remember back when there were no cats on cars and they all smelled like that?
