time to get the parts for the v8 swap want to put in a straight axel, what are you guys using

i want to replace my IFS front end with a straight axel 4x4 its an 89 4x4 coil spring measured one out of a cheerkie an its 5.5 inches wider,will be putting a rear end out of an explorer to get the 8.8 dont know what year to get yet for that but will look later for that

What the main purpose of it? Is it a daily driver/weekend wheeler, dedicated off-road wheeler etc.? There are tons of options and will depend on budget.

BOOM! Tech library, axles and yada yada oh look the information was already conveniently layed out for you, like going to make a sandwich and instead of picking up the one that somebody else made for you you just waste some time putting together the entire sandwich only to have it partially assembled and realize that there is a sandwich already made sitting right there!

Hey guys, no need to be snarky. When I first started frequenting this site I didn't realize there WAS a tech section for probably six months. And didn't realize there was more info in the magazine for another six months. I'm still learning how to find info after 4 years!
On the other hand, we do need more info from the OP to be able to suggest a direction for you to go in, basically what are you planning to use the truck for. I don't know enough about sas to be any help, but someone will.

daily driver week end 4 wheeler, iam pretty good with fab work, an low budget. some one posted the info i need is in tech library, not real good with computer but will try to look their, it took an hour just to figure how to post thanks for your time ,, THE OLD MAN

If you want low budget, I suggest a Dana30 from a Jeep Cherokee. It has the same wheel lug pattern, is super cheap and are millions of them out there. I have the dana30 and have DD it for 3 years with no problems.

thank you too sir:icon_thumby::icon_thumby:

old man b2, its about as easy as it looks if your indeed a low budget fabber with moderate experience. i personally think leafs are stupid easy from experience when using stock powertrains, going with a v8 adds some potential issues with springrates. jeep spring work well with b2's though. duff has some nice arms for the straight axles for a real good price (thats relative of course) now along with the weld on ford type wedges. be pushing a 1000 bux for all of that stuff though with steering.

were you thinking of a chrysler v8? ford or chevy?

302 with aluminum heads are pretty nice, and real easy to work with for weight and packaging.

the late model ls aluminum engines seems the best bang for the buck imo. but there costs in the oil pan setups that cost more then a good used engine as well:shok:

nice thing about going sas is that you can set the frame up to easily accommodate whatever engine it is you want to run. big block/small block/diesel--whatever.

i mention this crap because your not likely to have a c5 in an 89.

so you will need a trans and likely some sort of t case.

i see it as a way to open up your options so you get the most cost effective package you can source locally.

Check out escortgts's build thread. It'll be pretty much what you are looking for. Take pics of your progress and post up. Good luck

I have done a 302 swap and d30 swap all on a budget. With getting the axle for free, along with allot of other things plus things for cheap, I'm at 5k for mine and far from done. Basic rule, take what you estimate the cost to be and double it, that's your ball park budget.
