I need you boys to shoot some knowledge my way.
I have a 93 4.0 V6, and have been looking into exhaust for quite a while.
I have a few friends who have thier exhaust cut off right off the muffler. Of course they say it works great, and I know about back pressure and all that good stuff. My question is; a muffler (like a flow 40 or super44) is about $80, and a full set up with pipes is about $220... So would I be better off to get the muffler, and slap the stock pipes back on it, or have it cut off, or get the whole she-bang or nothing at all?
Thoughts? :icon_confused:

You would be better off going to an exhaust shop and having them install a muffler with whatever tail pipe configuration you want. I had 3 different exhaust setups on my 4.0 and none of them seemed to change the feel of the truck's performance. I had a Magnaflow then a Flowmaster installed with the tailpipe dumped under the bed before the rear axle and finally I went with a straight pipe (no muffler) exiting the side of the truck before the rear tire.

You will be much better off at least having a tailpipe installed instead of just cutting the stock muffler off.

Here is a video of what the straight pipe sounded like (also had JBA headers)

for some reason the video is not working but I'll leave it in here in case it starts working again.

Oh, ok.
So it is better to have stock pipes from the muffler back then none at all.
Interesting...

Exhaust gases can be mildly corrosive, you definitely want to have some sort of tailpipe installed to route those gases away from your body, chassis, brake lines, ect... Plus, a tail pipe will make your exhaust tone deeper (better imo), rather than running a dumped muffler.

Yea i would say go with a whole set up. Buy the muffler and go to a shop and have them coustom make an exaust system. It will look better, sound better (IMO) and you will prolly see a slight increase in gas milage :yahoo:

tip- most 4 stroke engines have enough backpressure built into the heads and manifolds to where you can just run open manifolds and itll still run good

I just got a flowmaster 40 installed with a new tail pipe coming out the back for $200, the only thing is they used two inch piping so im probably going to replace it.

mine dumps at the muffler and its fine.. but it wont pass smog if i had to smog it cause it doesnt exit the side or rear of the truck
