anybody here know whats the best way to go about removing the stock radio to put an aftermarket head unit in place of it? thanks chad.

Go to an auto parts store and buy a set radio removal tools, or make your own out of some thick wire. Insert tools into the four holes on front of radio and pull them back out. The radio should come out along with them. It doesn't get any simpler.

after i read your post i went outside and took a look at mine and noticed the holes, but theres a trim piece the surrounds my cluster, stereo, and heater controls. i cant see the edge to the stereo so is there any special trick to remove the panel around it, it seems pretty stubborn.

If your dash looks like this:

Then there should be no obstructions in your way and removing any part of the dash shouldn't be necessary. Maybe you can post a pic?

yes, my dash is identical to that. let me grab my camra where ever i placed it haha and i will get you a picture asap. thanks alot.

you have to remove the dash cover----just pulls off if i remember correctly. look it over really good cause there might be a hidden screw or two. just get a finger hold on it and GENTLY pull until it pops and then move down and pull until it pops and move down etc. etc. comes off just like that

You don't HAVE to remove the dash cover. My Explorer has that same dash and I didn't have to remove any part of the dash when I took my radio out. I don't know if there's any unusual part of his dash thats preventing him from removing the radio, which is why I asked for pics, but if his dash is like any other Ranger/Explorer dash from those years, there is no need to remove any part of the dash.

u dont have to remove dashboard parts. just insert some hard wire or really thin screw driver in the 4 holes and carefully pull the radio out

thanks for the responses i had to remove 2 torque bolts for the ash tray and then gently pull the dash cover off to gain access to the stereo. heres a pic of the new stereo.
