still no luck, ideas?

Did you change the coolant temp sensor yet? I guarantee it's your problem. But be aware there are 2 of them, there is a single wire one for the gauge and a 2 wire one for the computer. You need to change the one for the computer.

I'm pretty sure it's under $20, around $15 maybe

BooYa! found it. I was even right on the price.

I have a 85 ranger, and when the engine is cold it runs strong, but after running for just a bit, long enough for the engine to warm up, it starts trying to flood itself out, and drives horrible. I have changed just about every little thing I can think of except the carborator and coil.
When it is colder outside, the truck runs better for a longer period of time. I found a holly carb and I'll see if that fixes the issue.

im sure yours is a 2.8 if its carbed and mine is 2.9 and fuel injected. the problem is likely not similair. also, the idle is still effed, but its starts good now. injecters are weak but maybe i'll give the temp sensor a try. thanks guys for your suggestions

Check your fuel regulator to see if you have gas in the vacume lines. If so, you got a bad fuel regulator. Just a thought

Better yet, just put a gauge on it and the pressure should be about 33 psi at idle and up to about ~45 psi at W.O.T.

heres a thought, its already been replaced a week ago with a brand new one cause it was no good and fixed the starting issue, however the idle issue remains.

How about that cylinder thing on the side of the intake runners. I forgot what it's called. It might have something to do with idle. Spray some carburator cleaner in it.
It's called Idel Air Control

already changed. sorry if i forgot to mention

wierd thought:

back the idle screw on the throttle off until the stop hits the stop. Some owners like to futz with them and turn them up until the engine idles. If the voltage on the TPS gets too high, the computer goes crazy.

the ground wire with the connector on the NEG battery post likes to collect gunk and corrode. take it apart and clean it up. That causes erratic computer ops also.

Take it somewhere and have it put on a computer diagnostic machine, not a code reader. Thankfully I met a guy I went to school with who does mobile diagnostics now and he found several problems I would have not found otherwise....it saved me money and time knowing what was wrong and what wasn't.

when i bought it it ran perfect.
now the clutch fluid leaks,
havent traced it down yet. seing how slow it is.
and it was just in the shop for diagnostics and the idle wasn`t fixed but the starting issue was. they ddidn`t go too far cause i told em to keep it under 300 but it was 330. no biggy

Have you tried replacing the Throttle Position Sensor? My Bronco has the same issue. It idles like crap but as soon as you give it gas, it stops missing and runs normal. As soon as I unplug the TPS, the RPM's drop (the engine idles a little slower than it should) and it idles smooth. I plug it back in, the RPM's go up and the engine starts to miss again.

About your "cranking issue," the TPS might be the cause of that too. My Bronco cranks for about 6-7 seconds sometimes before it starts up. Not too bad but I think it is wearing out my starter because now it is starting to grind.

Another thing. My Bronco most of the time, starts on the second try. It sounds really bad the first try, then starts right up on the second try. I'm not sure if the TPS would cause that or not.

If I replace my TPS and it solves the problem, I'll let you know.

$330!? Dang! My friend only charges $50,but I did take it to the place that has worked on my moms Sable and they charged $65.....the problem then was the FPR but of course it ran fine for them....until I got almost home then it started acting up again. I think a lot of why my friend found the problems is that he is goood, very good. He went to tech school for auto electrics then worked at a place that did auto electrics for about 17 years so he has seen it all.
