In my search for a transmission, I found a 91 explorer with no motor, if it has a mazda Tranny, can I use my clutch and flywheel, starter? I have a 2.9 and the explorer had a 4.0

You can use ur 2.9 clutch basket n flywheel on the Mazda trans
The only 4.0 starter that will work with your 2.9 clutch n flywheel is the 4.0 auto starter a man 4.0 starter will not engage and disengage correctly or you can use your old 2.9 starter

Perfect, going to go look at a 91 explorer with a ticking motor, for 150.00, I have new clutch for the 2.9, thanks for the help

if you need a 4.0 auto starter let me know, i had mine rebuilt 2 months before swapping to manual trans and starter, and i'll let it go cheap

Thanks but nj is along way from mn , how much play should the input shaft have? None, some? If I grab it should it move? I just don't want to throw a bad input shaft bearing back in again,

The input shaft should have no noticeable play in it. The up side is that the M5OD's front bearings are pretty easy to service, so if it is bad it shouldn't be hard to replace before installing the trans. But the M5OD isn't as prone to bearing failure since they are of a much more robust design.
