Still having problems....

Well I took my BII back to the interstate today and low and behold the same ticking/loss of power problem occured, but the time the oil pressure gauge dipped to the low side.....After I let it sit, it ran fine....I spoke to my dad and he thought the oil pump is working fine, but once the oil gets pumped up top, he thinks it wont filter back down.....thats why, he believes, once you turn it off the oil returns to the bottom, hence it runs fine for awhile until it won't circulate again....any suggestions?
 
you may have a very sludged up motor there. It does really make sense, if you think about it. Im not an advocate of those engine flush's like the envirolushion. They pump a solvent through the motor, i have seen it fix a tick in an old 2.9 due to a gum'd lifter. Maybe you could give that a shot?
 
What did you spend the $900 on?

You maight want to get some "Marvel Mystery Oil" and run it through the crankcase according to the directions and see if that helps.

I spent $250 for the used engine, $250 for labor, $100 on work the mech had already done to determine it needed an engine, $200 for misc parts (water pump, plugs, etc.).....I used Sea Foam....Does MM oil work?
 
8oz of kerosene for 5 min...............
 
I have heard that also......I'm hoping its not the oil pump, but I really don't believe it is, because I do believe its getting oil to the top, but it won't flow back down....what weight oil should I use....and what is the best filter....motorcraft?
 
i use 10W-30 because i dont want it to breakdown at high temps. i think stock they say 5W-30. i think ive got the same problem as you. not sure what it is either but what you said about the oil not going back down sounds reasonable. i use motorcraft filters too, ive heard some rumors to stay away from Fram but not sure if their true.
 
10-30 will do fine. and only motorcraft or wix filters.

a quart of ATF run for 5 minutes does wonders to clean a crankcase too.

but instead of guessing, i would get to the core of the problem. get a real oil pressure gauge on that truck. i installed the one in my escort for less than $15 including the gauge, its a good investment and diagnostic tool. i think its time we rule out oil pressure as a problem or the problem once and for all.

you could also pull the valvecovers off and see how plugged the drains are.
 
Im with Wicked on this one get a real gauge and dont use the idiot light and dummy gauge. you can definitly just pop of the VC and look at the sludge of there's any. The kerosene works good and so does atf. The thing with a real engine flush that you remove the filter and pump solvent into the motor through the filter pad adapter and let it drain out the oil pan. Advantage is you dotn have to expose your motor aka bearings to any undue stress from having atf and kerosene churning around in the oil while its running. Not that i think 5 min of running it would hurt anything but it does sound like you have aa sludge problem possibly plugging lifters/galleys/ journals god really knows. Only use motorcraft or wix filters tho that may be part of your problem a partially clogged junk "black label" oil filter
 
pull the valve covers and check the drain holes.
be careful on the flushes,all the gunk it loosens up goes in the pan,it'll clog the screen in the pickup for the pump.

hey sweet by chance did u get a warranty with this motor or did the mechanic get it so cheap there is none cause if there is a warranty he should be able to get another one from the wreckers. and even if there isnt generally a wreck yard will give him another one if he explains the problem
it sound slike that motor u got there is going to be more headache than its worth. i did a motor one time and it would tick like heck at idle and when i put a load on ie gas the tick would go away.
the oil itself is free to run down to the engine through holes in the heads so if its developing a tick at low pressure that is ur pump. maybe the engine itself
doesnt have enough oil period wrong dipstick maybe
 
the oil is supposed to be able to drain back down to the oil pan through holes in the heads...what hes thinking is the return holes are partially plugged with sludge, which is filling the heads with oil and starving the bottom end. it happens.

sweet. after you get the gauge installed, run it down the highway until it makes the noise and see what your oil pressure is then. since thats the only time it makes the noise, thats the only pressure reading we care about right now. i would like to see at least 20 PSI on a hot engine.
