I have an 89 ranger 2.9 that appears to have the check valve in the pump stuck open. I have fuel pressure to specs with the engine running but as soon as it is turned off the pressure drops to zero. I have no fuel smell in the oil so the injectors are probably OK and the vac line to the regulator is dry. I have to cycle the key on/off 7 or 8 times or crank for about 10 secs to get the engine to start.

Has anyone tried to free the valve by blowing 5-10 psi air into the fuel line at the filter inlet? Anyone know of an additive that might help?:icon_confused:

Do NOT put pressurized air to the fuel system or tank.

They don't usually stick so much as leak. It's better to just replace them.

Found The Problem

Problem solved at last. Here is what I did

Tested fuel Pressure had 18lbs with and without vac on the FPR Pinched the return line closed, no change This says that the FPR is not the problem

Replaced Fuel Filter No change, did this just in case.

Replaced the Fuel Pump Nad Problem Solved.

Here is the kicker. After replacing the Pump I checked out the old one and found that the short piece of fuel line between the Pump and the outlet was cracked !!! Should have checked first and saved the cost of the new pump.
