I have a 1989 Ranger 2.9 v6 with im pretty sure it is a sticking lifter. I have heard of a couple of ways to free it up by using ATF, Marvel Mystery oil, etc... what is the best way to free it up and how is it done?:icon_confused:
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You have lifter tick? Welcome to 2.9 land. Its a common problem, its caused by insufficient oiling to the valvetrain due to worn cam bearings.

Yeah... you can either live with it, or rebuild your valve train... Also, make sure you don't use a Fram filter... I had one on my 2.9 and it ticked like crazy, changed the oil and used a Motorcraft filter and it still ticked, but not constantly...

Mine had that prob. but I just put Marvel Mystery Oil in it and it stopped after about 10 mins.. Haven't had the ticking come back so I guess it worked.

sweet might have to try. that did you do that right before an oil change?

No, I put it in with the oil change. I added 1 to 1 1/2 quarts in.

Hope it works for you like it did me.
